Anyone building a house needs to figure out which build route best suits their circumstances. Here we’ll explain the options available and what a project managers role is in managing a build. We’ll set out the ingredients for a successful build and describe how to be a successful project manager


Part 2 – Managing Construction Information

Building projects are complex and require lots of information to define what the finished home should look like as well as how houses it should be built to make sure it performs as expected. We’ll explain what information should be provided and how to manage it effectively. We’ll also identify key sources of information that’ll help throughout the build of your project.


Part 3 – Managing Time

When it comes to building, the old adage that time’s money certainly rings true. To help keep your build on track, we’ll explain what might go wrong and will outline the ingredients of a good plan. The key time management tools are covered in detail along with tips to deal with problems to make sure your build gets finished on time.


Part 4 – Managing Money

Money is the life blood of any building project and going over budget is something most self-builders worry about. Here we’ll cover what construct really costs and will explain how to establish a budget that reflects your individual project. Raising finance, dealing with VAT and managing the cash flow are also discussed along with tools that should be used to keep control of the money and make sure you don’t bust your budget.


Part 5 – Managing Quality

Making sure your finished home looks as good as it can be, without problems and defects, is a top priority for all self-builders. Here we’ll explain how to control quality and get the best out of the trades working on your project. 


Part 6 – Managing Health & Safety

All construction projects have a legal obligation to provide a safe working environment and the main regulations that enforce this are the Construction Design and Management Regulations 2015. We’ll outline the expectations the regulations places on self builders and explain what to expect for the key duty holders in making sure your site works safely.
