Our Ask a Self Build Expert events are an ideal opportunity to get focused one-to-one advice from a range of specialists about your project.

As well as meeting the experts, we also have a variety of seminars happening throughout the day to help you in your journey to build your ideal home.

No matter which stage you're at with your self-build, we have something for everyone - from finding a plot, and financing a self build to designing your dream home, or getting planning approval.

Self build seminars

During the day, our self-build experts will be presenting bite-size seminars to help kick-start your project. Join them at the home of the Self Build Academy and experience a taste of what our workshops offer. 

Meet the team! You can also speak with the Potton team to find out which courses you could benefit from depending on which stage you're at. They are FREE to attend and are a great way to understand more about building a house.

  • Finding a plot!
    Helping you at the start of your journey to find the perfect plot. Our seminar or plot-finding clinic will open your eyes to new ways of how to look for land with our expert tips and tricks.
  • Design
    After you've found your plot, the fun begins! Understand more about how to get your ideas down on paper through our architectural design experts. They will be able to guide you through the design process and how your ideas can be developed into your dream home.
  • Planning
    Make sure to bring details of your plot for a 1-2-1 appointment with our planning expert or self build consultant. Our team will look at some of the possible local authority constraints and other factors that could help you to negotiate the planning process.
  • Technical
    Our technical expert will be on hand to discuss our build systems. Learn about the benefits of timber frame or SIPs, and how it can help you achieve low U-values, and what this means for your SAP calculations and the current Building Regulations requirements.
  • Finance
    To help get your self-build project moving forward, our finance expert will be on-hand to give specific advice for your situation. You will be able to ask questions relating to sourcing financing for your self-build project, as well as insurance requirements, and budgeting tips.

Self Build Show Centre

We host Ask the Self Build Expert events in both St Neots and Swindon. The St Neots events are at the Potton Self Build Show Centre, home to 5 fully furnished show houses. In between talking to our self-build experts, take the time to walk around our houses to get inspiration for your own self-build project. Each home has been designed to cater for different styles and tastes; there's sure to be something to get your imagination flowing.

Our Swindon events are held at the National Self Build & Renovation Centre, home to more than 200 exhibitors. Potton have a full-size self-build house permanently installed at the NSBRC, giving you a unique opportunity to see one of our timber frame houses up-close.
