Our Potton experience started with a visit to Grand Designs. I took a set of plans with drawings (Artek Design House) for our proposed house to get feedback from timber frame company representatives.
The Potton representative came across very well and made reference to the fact that Potton
could offer the ‘safe hands’ route. He was however unsure as to whether the company would be able to build the frame which was completely outside their comfort zone. He suggested an approximate costing based upon a square metre rate that matched my expectation and this proved to be accurate.
Two weeks later, as promised, he informed us that Potton would be able to build the frame and the process began. There was a great deal of liaison between ourselves, Artek Design House and the design team at Potton to iron out a wide spectrum of challenges. Once these were resolved, the process was able to move forward.
We received a brief from Potton regarding pre-erection requirements which were then reiterated by the Contracts Manager during the site visit. We, Collins Developments, then set to work to prepare the footings, laying the kicker blocks to take the timber frame sole plate and installing the block and beam floor slab.
Potton’s team then set to work with the erection of the timber frame. This wasn’t without its challenges – the build proved to be more complicated than perhaps first anticipated and consequently the frame erection took longer than forecast. However the Contracts Manager was very approachable and any issues that arose were resolved.
The timber frame construction, with its ease of access, allowed us to incorporate systems that would have been more costly to install in a masonry build - intelligent lighting, a whole house audio system, under floor heating on all floors, remote controlled blinds and a whole house date network.
The self build process was challenging but rewarding – however we are currently living in a property that we would not have been able to buy on the open market - which is individual, unique in its design and very comfortable.
We would definitely do it again!
