Potton worked with Ideal Standard in a recent makeover to their Gransden show home

As the spectacular ‘Gransden’ show home at the Potton Homes self-build centre in Cambridgeshire recently underwent a complete makeover, leading British bathroom manufacturer Ideal Standard was enlisted as a partner to design its bathrooms – with the challenge of creating a solution that was both contemporary and suitable for a family home; yet also achieved a stunning finish in-keeping with heritage style of this characterful property.

The flagship 2,360 sq. ft Gransden show home is a wonderfully spacious four bedroomed family home boasting all the charm of yesteryear with exposed posts and beams and a huge inglenook fireplace.

One of three permanent show houses at the Potton self-build centre, it was opened to critical acclaim back in 1992 and has seen thousands of visitors since then and now attracts over 6,000 visitors a year

With family requirements and lifestyles evolving constantly over the years, the Gransden has recently undergone a complete makeover, bringing this beautiful home right up to date with the aim of providing inspiration to anyone considering building or tailoring their dream home.

The Gransden has recently undergone a complete makeover, opening up the old kitchen and dining room to provide an open-plan living space suited to family living.

Potton’s partner Ideal Standard was chosen specifically to head up the re-design of the bathrooms and cloakroom because of their expertise and product range.

The challenge of ‘making-over’ the bathroom was undertaken by Ania Stanik, Ideal Standard Interior Designer who is based at 'The Bath Room’, which is located in London’s famous design cluster area, Clerkenwell.

In keeping with the rest of the makeover – which saw the transformation of the property internally to create a more open-plan living space better suited to modern family living – the brief for the new bathroom was to create a balanced blend of traditional and contemporary that was also highly functional for family life.

Like many bathrooms in homes constructed in the late 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s, the Gransden’s original bathrooms were starting to feel a little dated, especially in consideration of the needs of modern family living, with space, storage, style and substance all priorities.

Ania Stanik, Ideal Standard Interior Designer, comments: “The bathroom is a very personal space that has to meet a variety of needs.

“On any one day it may be an oasis of relaxation, a room for reinvigoration and transformation, so achieving a balance is important.

“Therefore, as with any living space, there is usually an element of compromise that will influence design and product choices. However, modern day bathroom options mean that clever space-saving solutions and new technologies make it easier to achieve your ideal layout and style, to create your perfect bathroom.”

Ania’s designs for Gransden saw the introduction of Ideal Standard’s Dea collection, a new range of elegant ceramics, baths and storage solutions conceived by award-winning design and innovation studio, Seymourpowell, for Ideal Standard.

The Dea collection brings together beautiful design and functional excellence; moving away from the modernist, hard geometric products that are so prominent in the market, towards more curved, flowing surfaces, Dea embodies Ideal Standard’s commitment to creating a beautiful use of space.

The redesigned bathrooms at Gransden feature freestanding baths, open shower areas and a mix of classic styled basins and taps.

“Dea was the perfect solution for what we were looking to achieve as the collection brings together beautiful design and functional excellence; moving away from the modernist, hard geometric products that are so prominent in the market, towards more curved, flowing surfaces,” said Ania.

“Dea embodies Ideal Standard’s commitment to creating a beautiful use of space and we have created a highly functional yet elegant new bathroom that will leave you with a timeless suite, incorporating new technology for a luxury family bathroom.”

Every element of the re-designed bathrooms has been carefully thought through for maximum elegance, still with the user experience in mind.

The baths feature chicly flared sides, fluid corners and slim edges, with comfort at their core.

The basins are deep enough to wash in, but do not splash back when the tap is turned on, while curved front furniture slopes away from the user, allowing them to get even closer to the basin.

Basin units also provide masses of space for beauty products, making them both functional and beautiful.

The coordinating storage furniture also offers generous, well planned space to conceal clutter and make the most of the available space. These include a side unit, high cabinet and 1/2 column, complimented by soft-edged open shelf mirror units with integrated LED lighting and round-cornered mirrors with Bluetooth connectivity and speakers.

Ania added: “Luxury bathrooms are known for meeting high standards in design and creativity, but often fall short in terms of usability. With basins that are too shallow and splash the user when the tap is turned or sharp and unfriendly edges, many ranges are beautiful but not practical.

Dea however brings together both form and function to create the ultimate bathroom experience and we are delighted to showcase its full potential in the beautiful Gransden show home, combining the ergonomic know-how for which Ideal Standard is renowned with high-end styling and design flair to create a contemporary yet timeless suite.

“The bathroom is one of the most considered rooms in any home. It equals the kitchen in its aspirations and is now a wellness sanctuary in which to de-stress and relax.

“Size and the amount of time we spend in the bathroom has increased meaning the bathroom now is a space in its own right.

“With this in mind, it’s essential to choose a design that combines stylish products that are suitable for modern living  - doing so maximises the contribution overall that any bathroom makes to the proposition of a property.”

The full Dea collection by Ideal Standard includes vanity basins, storage units, cabinets, worktops, baths, toilets, bidets and a strikingly sculptured totem; it gives plenty of scope for creating individual yet harmonious bathroom designs, however big or small the bathroom space.
