Case Study of the Month - May
Looking for a challenge
Land Cost: £250,000
Build Cost: £300,000
Current Value: Unknown
Spotting the potential, and looking for a challenge, Melanie and Andrew Oxer purchased a 1 acre plot in Bedfordshire, complete with dilapidated bungalow and numerous outbuildings. The couple had already decided they wanted to self build in timber frame, and with location being key, Potton was the obvious choice.
'We decided on timber frame and wanted to try and use local trades. Potton's location was key to the choice.'
The journey started with a trip to Potton's Self Build Show Centre in Little Paxton. Here, Melanie and Andrew were able to gain a wealth of information and valuable advice. It also gave the opportunity to see first hand the superb build quality. The show houses are ideal to give you a feel for what your home could be like.
'It also made us realise that we didn't want post and beams in our house.'
Working with Kloeber.
Kloeber supplied all the doors and windows for this Potton project, Matt Higgs Sales Director and co-owner of Kloeber said ‘This project is a perfect opportunity to show how a combination of more than one material type on the same project works in perfect harmony. The entrance door to the house is one of our award winning timber FunkyFronts and the French doors are timber too. The windows and the bifolding doors are all from our aluminium range but with all glazing having the same factory finish in a RAL colour, RAL 7016 in Anthracite Grey, all aspects combine together perfectly.
We enjoy working together in partnership with Potton to ensure that clients receive exactly what they require for their self build and exceed their design expectations.
Andrew is a stone mason, so he created all the worktops for the kitchen himself. The kitchen worktops are made from a special marble, while their daughters en-suite is from a beautiful pink marble.
The downstairs cloakroom features a stunning sink, with the tap suspended from the ceiling. The couple had a staircase custom designed from a specialised designer in Norfolk, while they designed the garden layout themselves and carried out all the work.
DID YOU ATTEND ONE OF OUR SEMINARS OR WORKSHOP PRESENTATIONS AND IF SO, WAS IT BENEFICIAL?
No, did not attend
HOW DID YOU FEEL AFTER VISITING OUR SELF-BUILD CENTRE?
We were able to gain some good information and advice plus an idea of the build quality. It also made us realise that we didn’t want the beams in our house.
WERE OUR DESIGN AND PLANNING EXPERTS ABLE TO HELP YOU TO CREATE YOUR NEW HOME?
They were although the design guy that started work with us left partway through and the replacement was not as helpful. We were left to come up with designs ourselves and only after showing them to someone outside Potton did we realise that some of the designs did not work. We got there in the end but the support at the design stage could have been better.
DID YOU USE THE SERVICES OF A POTTON APPROVED BUILDER OR SUBCONTRACTORS FOR YOUR PROJECT?
Yes we did, we used a mixture of those recommended and our own contacts.
WERE YOU SATISFIED WITH THE PERFORMANCE AND LEVEL OF SUPPORT PROVIDED BY YOUR CONTRACTS MANAGER AND THE ERECTION TEAM WHILST ON SITE?
Yes, very impressed.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE WHOLE SELF-BUILD PROCESS? WAS IT, EASY, CHALLENGING, INSPIRING, WOULD YOU DO IT AGAIN?
It was hard work keeping ahead of the trades but very challenging and inspiring. It was easy, not too difficult. We split the project between us and each looked after certain trades.
