BARGEBOARD

Timber member fixed to face of gable ladder frame at verge location

BATTEN

A narrow strip of wood used to cover joints or to provide a fixing. Also fulfils a decorative function over plywood or wide boards

BRACING

Holding or fastening two or more parts together in place.

BUTT JOINT

Joint made by joining two timber members together end to end without overlapping.

CLADDING

The external finish to the timber frame which may built on their own foundations and tied to the timber frame (brickwork, rendered and fair face blockwork, stone), or may be fully supported by timber frame structure (tile hanging, timber or other board and sheet materials, render on mesh, etc)

COURSING (BRICK)

The finishing level of the upper or lower edge of a row of bricks. This level may need to correspond with adjacent items, e.g. window sills and heads

DAMP PROOF COURSE

A waterproof physical barrier to restrict the passage of moisture from the ground up to the building structure, located under all sole plates

DORMER

The roofed structure containing a window set vertically, and projecting through the main sloping roof

DRYLINING

The finish achieved by screwing plasterboard to the frame and filling the screw holes and joints with filler compound to produce a finish ready for decoration

EAVES

The lower border of a roof that overhangs the wall.

FASCIA BOARD

Continuous timber member fixed to the toe of the roof rafters at eaves location

FLASHING

Soft sheet metal used in waterproofing

FLOATING FLOOR

Floor construction used to provide better sound insulation or thermal values

FLY SCREEN

Material used to prevent the ingress of birds, insects etc, at eaves and gable locations

GABLE

The triangular area of a building beneath the roof

GALVANISE

To coat iron or steel with rust-resistant zinc

Proprietary fencing system used in building comprising wire fence panels bolted to each other, placed in heavy floor blocks


JOISTS

Any of the small timbers or metal beams ranged parallel from wall to wall in a structure to support a floor or ceiling

LINTEL

A horizontal structural member spanning and usually carrying the load above an opening

NOGGIN

Horizontal piece of timber fixed between the solid vertical studs within partitions to provide fixing. In Scotland they are referred to as dwangs

NOTCHING

Cutting out small pieces of timber to allow the passage of pipes etc. Very important to refer to relevant construction details before cutting

OVERSITE

Structural ground floor upon which timber frame is erected

RAFTERS

One of the sloping beams that supports a pitched roof

RIDGE

Peak of a roof
