BATTEN
A narrow strip of wood used to cover joints or to provide
a fixing. Also fulfils a decorative function over plywood or
wide boards
BRACING
Holding or fastening two or more parts together in place.
BUTT JOINT
Joint made by joining two timber members together end
to end without overlapping.
CLADDING
The external finish to the timber frame which may built on their own foundations
and tied to the timber frame (brickwork, rendered and fair face blockwork,
stone), or may be fully supported by timber frame structure (tile hanging,
timber or other board and sheet materials, render on mesh, etc)
COURSING (BRICK)
The finishing level of the upper or lower edge of a row
of bricks. This level may need to
correspond with adjacent items, e.g. window sills and heads
DAMP PROOF COURSE
A waterproof physical barrier to restrict the passage of
moisture from the ground up to the building structure, located
under all sole plates
DORMER
The roofed structure containing a window set vertically,
and projecting through the main sloping roof

the load above an opening
NOGGIN
Horizontal piece of timber fixed between the solid vertical
studs within partitions to provide fixing. In Scotland they
are referred to as dwangs
NOTCHING
Cutting out small pieces of timber to allow the passage of
pipes etc. Very important to refer to relevant construction
details before cutting
