"We got married in July 2006 and moved in to Pam’s house, we extended and refurbished the entire house but still felt that we would like to choose our home together.

Having looked around at the market, there was nothing that really appealed within our price bracket, so we started considering refurb and new build as an option to utilise my 30 years building experience from houses to hospitals. During one of our drive arounds, looking for likely candidates we spotted an old dilapidated farmyard and bungalow which really caught our eye but as it was not for sale, thought little more of it.

It was in a lull of interest, the ones you go through wondering whether you may as well stay where you are, that I went on to rightmove and up popped the same bungalow on over half an acre in need of refurbishment.

We immediately put in an offer based upon achieving planning approval for a replacement dwelling, contacted Potton and put our house on the market to release the funds to buy and to build, eventually moving into rented accommodation.

Having developed the design with Potton’s in house architectural service, we applied for planning but had it refused. We then redesigned a totally new scheme more in keeping with the surrounding buildings, again utilising the planning service and at no additional cost, secured planning and started demolition of the rendundant farm buildings, concrete yard and bungalow in June 2011."

"Project Managing the build myself, I set myself a fast track programme and applying my contracting principles to my house appeared to be a logical step, maximising trade overlaps and sequencing multiple trades on site.

Having completed the groundworks and substructure, the frame was delivered in early July and was erected by the Potton team within a few weeks.

The whole project took 22 weeks including demolition, and we moved in in early November that year and absolutely love it.

Why self build?

"Bespoke tailored design, satisfaction and cost effectiveness."

Why Potton?

"Because they are the market leader with years of experience – you can really have what you want knowing you have back-up before, during and long after the construction process."

Change in career...

"I enjoyed the experience so much that I opted for a change of career and having been vetted by Potton, established Forge Project Management, a freelance project management company to combine my previous experience in construction with that gained in building my own Potton house to provide Potton clients with a full managed build and a level of a support tailored to the individuals needs.

I have now completed several Potton builds on behalf of their clients and have several in various stages of construction from planning to nearing completion."
