Planning your kitchen at the right stage

A kitchen should always be planned in conjunction with the design of the new build – not once the build has commenced

Great kitchens require three vital elements:

  • Top rate innovative design
  • Quality products and components
  • Skilled installation staff and project management

A kitchen should always be planned in conjunction with the design of the new build, although installation of the kitchen should not take place until the latter stages of the project, when the services are all in their correct place. This is common sense, but in many projects, the kitchen will be fitted prior to completion of these. Callerton -2_135x 135

The kitchen in this new build includes a large island incorporating a hob and the ventilation is via down draught extraction – this requires a large ventilation pipe built in at the groundwork’s stage.

The below image shows the under-floor heating being installed – it is important to remember, under-floor heating should not be laid below kitchen furniture and appliances.

The centre island requires electrics, water, gas and wastes - all must be in situ prior to the kitchen being fitted. When building in an off-plan situation it doesn’t make sense for the services and building works not being complete and correct prior to installation of the kitchen.

When designing your kitchen you should spend time ensuring the design fulfils all your aesthetic and functional needs and requirements, this is crucial to ensure it meets your expectations.

The process begins by establishing the design criteria and requirements, a good designer will help identify your likes, dislikes and needs. In the example below, the designer established the client’s desire for a contemporary kitchen with an island, a seating area and appliance requirements.

The designer interprets the information gained from their clients into a viable design proposal taking into account physical restrictions and budgetary requirements. An initial flat plan is produced and then transferred to the computer enabling these to be viewed in 3D.Callerton 3

You should ensure you choose the right products to incorporate into your new kitchen. You need to ensure how all the elements will look when put together and how they perform. Considering longevity and investing in the best your budget allows is a sound strategy. The importance of skilled installation staff and project management are critical to the successful outcome of all kitchen projects.
